I am writing to you today as a supporter of the Hope Can't Wait Campaign to urge the Government of Canada to make suicide prevention a national priority by developing and implementing a fully comprehensive National Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Every day, families, friends, workplaces, schools, and communities across Canada are impacted by suicide. Behind every statistic is a person whose life mattered and a network of loved ones left searching for answers. Suicide is preventable, yet too many Canadians continue to face barriers to timely mental health care, crisis intervention, and ongoing support.

While important initiatives exist across provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, and the non-profit sector, Canada still lacks a coordinated, accountable, and adequately resourced national strategy that brings governments, experts, people with lived experience, and community organizations together around shared goals.

A National Suicide Prevention Strategy should build upon the existing frameworks, but not be limited to:

1. Establish measurable national targets to reduce suicide deaths and suicide attempts.

2. Improve timely access to mental health and crisis services across Canada, regardless of where people live.

3. Strengthen early intervention, prevention, and postvention supports for individuals, families, schools, workplaces, and communities.

4. Address disparities affecting Indigenous Peoples, veterans, youth, seniors, LGBTQIA2S+ communities, rural and remote populations, and others who experience elevated suicide risk, through culturally safe and community-led approaches.

5. Invest in research, surveillance, and evidence-based programs to better understand what works and where resources are most needed.

6. Create clear federal leadership with ongoing public reporting to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Canada has demonstrated that national leadership can drive meaningful change in public health. Suicide prevention deserves the same level of commitment. No one should lose their life because help was unavailable, inaccessible, or arrived too late.

I respectfully ask you to:

1. Publicly declare your support for the development of a comprehensive National Suicide Prevention Strategy through the Hope Can't Wait Campaign by visiting hopecantwait.ca/mp-support-submission.

2. Advocate within Parliament and your caucus for federal leadership and sustained investment in suicide prevention.

3. Work collaboratively with provinces, territories, Indigenous governments, people with lived and living experience, researchers, health professionals, and community organizations to create a coordinated national approach.

4. Ensure that suicide prevention remains a non-partisan priority focused on saving lives and supporting recovery for every Canadian.

Every day without coordinated action represents more lives at risk and more families experiencing unimaginable loss. Canadians deserve a national commitment to preventing suicide through evidence-informed policies, accessible supports, and sustained leadership.

Everyone has a responsibility and something that they can do to prevent suicide. For the federal government, that starts with answering the call now.
